What's New at the Counseling Center |
Counseling CenterStress and Stress ManagementThe subject of stress is a frequent topic among men and women faced with the challenges, responsibilities and demands of college life. It is not uncommon to hear people talking about their difficulties with feeling overwhelmed, being burned out, and “stressed to the max.” What people often don’t know is that stress is complicated. There are many different kinds of stress—acute stress, episodic acute stress, chronic stress, and post-traumatic stress—each being different in important ways and requiring differences in management and treatment. What is also frequently unknown is that there are healthy and unhealthy ways of coping with and managing stress. For example, a recent survey by the American Psychological Association found that one-third of the respondents either eat (22%) or drink alcohol (14%) as a means of coping with stress. Learning healthy ways to cope with and manage stress is an important part of taking care of one’s “whole self” and living a healthier lifestyle.
